There was plenty of hype surrounding the 1992 Iditarod, which was set to begin on Feb. 29, 1992 with a sprint from downtown Anchorage to the Eagle River VFW Post 9785, site of Checkpoint 1 on the annual race from Anchorage to Nome.
MEA had installed 1,523 new electric meters in Chugiak-Eagle River in 1982, according to a front-page story in the Feb. 10, 1983 edition of the Star. The story went on to say that new home starts in the area were expected to surpass the total for the rest of the Municipality.
