Hilda Miller, whose sharp scissors, sharper wit and a passion for the outdoors turned her Eagle River barber shop into a rollicking community landmark, died on Feb. 28, 2012 at her cabin in Big Lake. She was 70.

A 21-year-old paratrooper assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson was killed in an improvised explosive device attack on Tuesday, April 3 while on patrol in Afghanistan.

This week I’d like to take you on an excursion to a glacier theatre...a theatre of eternal ice...a theatre surrounded by dizzying, snow-encrusted peaks, sheer granite walls, a restless theatre of echos, rumbling avalanches; a pensive, brooding theater of silence...a theatre where time suspends itself into an endless beginning.
