It appeared to be over. With less than a minute and a half left in the Alaska School Activities Association First National Cup semi-final state championship game at the Menard Sports Complex in Wasilla, the Soldotna Stars led the Chugiak Mustangs 1-0.
Chugiak fell 56-50 in the third-place game of the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Dimond. Brandy Bookout led the Mustangs with 14 points and reached double digits for the fourth straight game. Nicole Pinckney (13 points) and Ashlynn Burgess (11) also reached double figures for Chugiak.
Three local grapplers reached the finals of the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska 2014 Class 4A Wrestling State Championships on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Bartlett High.
Eagle River High’s girls finished atop the Anchorage Scholastic Bowling League standings following the final week of play Feb. 6 at Center Bowl. The Wolves finished with 196 points, 11 ahead of second-place Bartlett. Chugiak’s girls (121) finished sixth.
Chugiak starts its quest for a Class 4A state hockey title today (Thursday, Feb. 13) against Soldotna at 2:30 p.m. at the Menard Sports Complex in Wasilla. The Mustangs are the third seed out of the Cook Inlet Conference and the Stars are the top team from the North Star Conference.
Fifth-seeded Chugiak upset No. 4 Service with a 6-2 win in the opening round of the Cook Inlet Conference hockey tournament Monday, Feb. 3 at the McDonald Center. The Mustangs will face top-seeded South today (Thursday, Feb. 6) with a championship berth on the line. The Wolverines blanked eighth-seeded East 8-0 on Monday.

Eagle River notched its first Cook Inlet Conference win of the season with a 41-38 victory over visiting Service on Saturday, Jan. 25. Lauren Frost (14 points) and Samantha Coy (10) led the way for the Wolves.
