Eagle River High’s girls basketball program has managed only one win over the past three seasons. And that’s just where the Wolves are keeping that record — in the past.
Believe it or not, graduating six seniors and losing its point guard has benefited Chugiak’s girls basketball team, said third-year head coach Ryan Hales.

Chugiak’s boys basketball team has several fresh faces this season. Just three returners are back for the Mustangs — Skyler Fullmer, Payton Fullmer and Roger Jorgensen. And of those three, only the Fullmer cousins saw significant playing time last season.

After winning only two games in the 2010-11 season, Eagle River’s boys basketball team finished 6-8 in Cook Inlet Conference play and was just two points shy of reaching the semifinals of the CIC tourney.

Nobody joins a Nordic ski team to lift weights or swim. “We’ve been doing a lot of weights, a lot of core, a lot of running,” said Eagle River Wolves head coach Liz Turner during a 5-kilometer freestyle Nordic ski race Saturday, Dec. 8 on Sand Lake.

Sarissa Lammers and Sam Hartke could be seeing a lot of each other this season. The Chugiak duo finished fourth and fifth respectively at the Sand Lake 5-kilometer races held Dec. 8 in Anchorage to lead the Mustang girls to a fourth-place finish.

First-place South (8-0) dealt Eagle River a 9-0 Cook Inlet Conference defeat Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the McDonald Center. The Wolves fell to 3-5 in the CIC.
Visiting West High handed Eagle River a 62-18 loss in Cook Inlet Conference wrestling action Dec. 5.
Chugiak’s girls bowling team remained in first place in the Anchorage Scholastic Bowling League standings after getting a 22-13 win over Dimond on Dec. 6 at Jewel Lake Bowl. Chugiak’s boys team didn’t fare as well against the Lynx, falling from first to third in the standings after a 35-0 loss. Eagle River’s boys dropped one spot in the league to fifth with a 27-8 loss to West, while the Wolves’ girl moved up one notch to fourth with a 27-8 victory.

Eagle River High senior Brenden Lyon led all local marksmen by finishing eighth overall with an aggregate score of 378.6 at the Cook Inlet Conference riflery championships Saturday, Dec. 1 at West High.
