Chugiak High senior goalie Jack Straub helped to keep the Mustangs in contention prior to a 4-3 overtime loss to South Anchorage last Thursday. Straub faced 36 shots, while Chugiak amassed only 17, in the extended session ending the calendar year for both clubs.

Senior RJ Discherl led all scorers with 21 points, helping the Eagle River varsity basketball team to a 58-49 victory over the Palmer Moose in the Wolves Den on Dec. 16. A large crowd was on hand to watch the 2014-15 edition of the Wolves, who put together a pair of strong middle quarters for the near double-digit win.

CER girls hockey team improves with a tie

The Chugiak-Eagle River girls hockey team confirmed their continued improvement of late, tying league-leading Dimond-West in play at Ben Boeke Ice Arena Dec. 15. Head coach Scott Hulse was pleased with the team. After giving up a goal in the first half minute of the contest, the local girls played tough, holding the leaders scoreless through the duration of the contest.

Local individual Chugiak senior Emily Vannortwich garnered accolades after placing second, firing a 286, during the two-day Cook Inlet Conference riflery championship held at West Anchorage High Dec. 5-6.

Chugiak’s Burton leads league with 276 game, Eagle River bowlers sweep South

Both individual and team depth were displayed this week with victories on different planes by local high school bowling teams during last Thursday’s match at Jewel Lake Bowl. The Eagle River boys and girls bowling squads delivered decisions of 33-3 and a 27-8 over West Anchorage in the season’s fourth week, allowing both to climb the league’s ladder.

Bringing together a community for a well-played, hard-fought and tightly-contested game between the Eagle River Wolves and Chugiak Mustangs hockey team was in the cards for the hundreds gathered as a capacity crowd Saturday evening at the Ben Boeke Ice Arena in Anchorage.
