Madeline Alexandra Smith was born on Sept. 24, 2012 at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage. She weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces and is the daughter of Kari and Robert Smith of Eagle River.
Dustin Holta, 15, earned the rank of Eagle Scout on Aug. 21.
Kastle’s Kreations was voted “Best of Anchorage” as the top food truck/street vendor in the Anchorage Press 2012 Press Picks edition. The cupcake truck is owned and operated by Kastle Sorensen of Eagle River.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9785 and Ladies Auxiliary of Eagle River received the VFW National Outstanding Community Service Post Award at the VFW National Convention July 23 in Reno, Nev. The award was presented during an invitation-only reception.
Katie Olson and Colin Ossiander will be married Oct. 6 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Anchorage. They met in 1999 while attending Chugiak High School. Katie was a friend of Colin’s sister, Megan, but played in the school orchestra with Colin. Katie and Colin became close during the many summers they spent at Anchorage String Camp in Birchwood. Their shared love for music, film and humor drew them together.
Paul Gabrys, of Eagle River, a sophomore majoring in chemical engineering at the University of Rochester, has been named to the Dean’s List for academic achievement for the spring 2012 semester. Gabrys is the son of Bruce Gabrys and Theresa Gabrys and a graduate of Chugiak High School.
Navy Seaman Apprentice Kate I. Mulcahy, of Chugiak, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Mulcahy completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations,” which gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Mulcahy is a 2010 graduate of Chugiak High and the daughter of Deborah and Peter Mulcahy of Chugiak.
Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Raider C. Zavodsky graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Zavodsky completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Zavodsky is the son of Richard Cormier of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and a 2011 graduate of Eagle River High School.
Sean N. Hamp a lifelong resident of Birchwood/Eagle River, graduated on July 13 as a U.S. Marine Pvt. First Class in the 1st Battalion, Alpha Company 1010 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif. On July 4, Hamp received his Eagle, Globe and Anchor. During basic training, Hamp earned the “crossed rifles” badge as an Expert Rifleman. Hamp graduated from Chugiak High in 2011, where he was a member of the school’s NJROTC program. He is the son of John and Samie Hamp of Eagle River.
Kevin Ulrich, of Chugiak, was one of eight University of Evansville students who spent their last days of summer break halfway across the world, participating in business and engineering projects in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Ulrich, a graduate of Chugiak High School, is majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
