For a moment, it appeared to be over for Cierra Mickens, 23, the first Eagle River resident to ever compete on “The Voice.” It was the battle rounds on March 25 and Mickens (or “The Alaskan Powerhouse,” as she is called) had just finished singing Sara Bareille’s “Brave” with contestant Emily B. Mickens and Emily B. were on Shakira’s team.
Twelve local teachers were honored at the annual Excellent in Education reception at the Bear Mountain Grill on March 19. Teachers from each of Chugiak-Eagle River’s elementary, middle and high schools were awarded with a plaque bearing a large golden apple.
The Boys Scouts of Alaska have a little more money in their piggy bank, thanks to a hefty donation made by the Eagle River Valley Community Council and the Heritage Estates Well Compensation Trust.
Hundreds of firemen from across Alaska walked solemnly down Fifth Avenue in Anchorage on March 15 to pay tribute to Anchorage Fire Department Senior Capt. Jeffery Bayless, 51, who collapsed during a training exercise on March 7.
