Chinooks close out regular season with wins
Final Fish home game today
The Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks finished the Alaska Baseball League regular season by winning two of three games over the Anchorage Bucs all at Loretta French Park.
After opening with an 8-3 loss July 25, Chugiak-Eagle River rebounded with an 8-5 win Friday, July 26 and an 8-2 victory Saturday, July 27. The Chinooks finished a league-worst 8-27.
On Saturday, starter Andrew Klausmeier scattered five hits and allowed just one earned run and two walks in a complete game effort for the win.
Manager Jon Groth had relievers warmed up from the fifth inning on, but Klausmeier didn’t need any help.
“He was locked in,” Groth said. “When you have a guy locked in, you want to let him go.”
Klausmeier’s performance keyed the victory, Groth said.
“That sets the tone for the rest of the game when you have a pitcher dealing like that,” he said.
Klausmeier had plenty of help from his teammates.
The Chinooks totaled 11 hits and scored in all but two innings.
Nicholas Covello led Chugiak-Eagle River at the plate, going 3-for-3 and scoring twice. For the second night in a row, Griffin Gum had two hits and drove in two runs for the Chinooks, who also got two hits apiece from Collin Radack and Chance Gusbeth.
Radack — who finished the regular season fifth among ABL sluggers with a .310 batting average — went 3-for-4 with three RBI’s on Friday.
Ending on a winning note in front of a large crowd on military appreciation night was a great way to cap the regular season, Groth said.
“It’s nice to put together a couple of back-to-back wins,” he said.
The Chinooks opened the ABL end of season tournament with a 3-1 loss to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Monday, July 29 at Mulcahy Stadium. Tyler Krahn went 3-for-4 to lead Chugiak-Eagle River.
The Chinooks played the Bucs on Wednesday, July 31, but a score was not available when the Star went to press.
The five-team, round-robin tournament continues today (Aug. 1) when the Chinooks play their final home game against Mat-Su at 5 p.m. Chugiak-Eagle River concludes pool play against the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks on Friday, Aug. 2 at 3 p.m. at Mulcahy. The championship is set for Saturday, Aug. 3 at 4 p.m. at Mulcahy.
