An undermanned Chugiak football squad lost its season opener 34-12 to West Valley Saturday night in Fairbanks, while the Eagle River Wolves were run over by the defending state runner-up South at Anchorage Football Stadium.

Mustangs coach Duncan Shackelford said his team — which suited just 23 varsity players — couldn't deal with the Wolfpack's ability to rotate in fresh players on offense and defense.

"The kids were in shape, but not in shape to play in 70 degrees against a platoon team," Shackelford said by phone after the game. "West Valley's a good football team."

Chugiak led after the first quarter and trailed just 14-6 at halftime.

Sophomore running back Josh Capers had a huge debut for Chugiak (0-1 overall, 0-0 Cook Inlet Conference), scoring both touchdowns and rushing for 108 yards on just 16 carries.

"Josh had a great game," Shackelford said.

Larenzo Graham scored twice for West Valley (1-0), which tied for first place last season in the Railbelt Conference.

In Anchorage, Eagle River fell victim to a powerful South team that raced out to a 53-6 lead at halftime.

Jeavonte Dunn caught a 66-yard touchdown pass from Peter Kott in the second quarter to provide the lone bright spot for Eagle River, which fell to 0-1 overall and in the CIC.

Following the game, Eagle River coach Jason Brewer took the blame for his team's lopsided loss.

"I didn't prepare them well enough," Brewer said.

Chugiak returns to action Friday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. in the home opener at Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium. Eagle River will host West on Saturday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m.
