Monofill hearing scheduled

The Anchorage Planning and Zoning Commission (PNZ) will meet Monday, Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Anchorage Assembly chambers in the Loussac Library in Anchorage, where they’ll take public testimony regarding a proposed monofill site in Chugiak. PNZ is considering an application by Eklutna Inc. to rezone property the Native corporation owns off Kerbow Lane in Chugiak.
The rezone would allow Eklutna to partner with Central Recycling Services, which would operate the facility.
During previous public meetings, Chugiak residents have expressed vocal opposition to the site, which developers say will be used only to dump inert construction and other recycling waste. The Chugiak Community Council has passed a resolution in opposition to the idea.
The Municipal Planning Department has recommended allowing Eklutna’s petition to proceed. The rezone would allow the project to go forward as long as other environmental permits are obtained.
