Candidate forum set for 6 p.m. tonight
Plenty of opinions expected at ER Lions Club
There should be no shortage of opinions in the room tonight when nearly all Alaska House and Senate candidates hoping to represent Chugiak-Eagle River gather at the Eagle River Lions Club for an area-wide candidates forum beginning at 6 p.m.
“We have 11 of the 13 confirmed so far,” said Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce executive director Susie Gorski on Tuesday, Aug. 14.
Gorski said she’s expecting a lively, rapid-fire exchange of opinions during the forum, which is also being sponsored by the Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions and the Eagle River Area Rotary Club.
“Because there are so many candidates, there are only going to be five questions,” she said.
A random draw will determine the order in which candidates respond.
Gorski said Eagle River’s Pete Mulcahy and Bobby Jefts will serve as moderators. She said the duo was chosen for their good public speaking skills and familiarity with Chugiak-Eagle River issues.
“We decided to keep it local,” she said.
The Lions will provide snacks for a small fee during the event, she said.
Although politics can often get heated, Gorski said she’s hoping the event will have a friendly, respectful tone.
“These are our friends and neighbors and we’re glad they’re stepping up to run,” she said. “It can be a very difficult job.”
The 2012 primary elections will be held Aug. 28.
The Eagle River Lions Club is located at the corner of Eagle River Road and Eagle River Loop Road, across from Walmart. For more information on the event, call the chamber at 694-4702.
