West High defeated Eagle River 49-6 on Saturday, Aug. 18 in Cook Inlet Conference football action at Eagle River
With the loss, Eagle River fell to 0-2 in the CIC and overall. West improved to 1-0 in the conference and 1-1 overall.
Despite the same outcome as Week 1, head coach Jason Brewer said he saw improvement from Eagle River.
"We drove the ball up and down the field," he said. "Our offensive line did a great job."
In front of a home crowd for just the third time, the Wolves played hard, Brewer said.
"We matched their intensity," he said. "We got to see the grit of our team, which I'm very happy with."
Eagle River travels to Dimond (1-0 in the CIC, 1-1 overall) on Friday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. The Lynx used a blocked punt late in the fourth quarter to set up a game-winning touchdown run to get past Chugiak (0-1 in the CIC, 0-2 overall) 14-7 on Friday, Aug. 17 at Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium.
Dimond will be another strong opponent, Brewer said. But having to play seven of eight games against tough CIC foes, every week brings a challenge, he said.
"it's not a forgiving schedule," Brewer said.
