The U.S. Army said last week that a 22-year-old paratrooper based at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson died when his unit came under attack by small arms fire on Aug. 7 in Koragay, Afghanistan.

Specialist Ethan Jacob Martin, of Lewiston, Idaho, was a paratrooper assigned as a cavalry scout to the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment. The unit is part of the 3,500-soldier 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division. The “Spartan” brigade deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in December.

Three other soldiers were injured in the attack that killed Martin. He is the eighth member of the brigade to die in combat since the deployment began.

According to the Army, Martin enlisted in 2009 and attended basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky before arriving at JBER in March of 2012.

His next of kin have been notified.
