Keep an eye out for Lions at the State Fair

If you attended the Bear Paw Parade, you probably saw the Lions’ Vision and Eye Screening Trailer go by you, with Lions and Leos marching alongside, handing out candy to the kids and having a blast along the way. Now, those same Lions and Lions clubs from around the state are organizing together to provide free eye screening at the Alaska State Fair.

Put the Lions on your “must-see” list of free things to do at the fair this year.

Stop in at the Lions’ Eye Screening Trailer Aug. 25 through Sept. 3. Hours for the screening will be noon to 8 p.m. throughout the fair. There will be eye tests offered for children from 6 months to 7 years old; these tests can detect seven different eye problems that can be corrected by a specialist or optometrist if they are detected prior to the age of 8.

Other eye tests, offered for kids and young adults ages 6 months to 21 years old, will detect the strength of vision in both eyes and even color blindness. Lions will recommend those in need of new glasses, or a change in glasses, to see an optometrist, OD, or DD.

Adults ages 21 and over can get vision screenings as well. These tests include color blindness and glaucoma. Making VISION a healthy priority is important because though we may not realize it, our vision can change with age, finding issues early can lead to quicker and easier treatments. Some normal changes include losing focus, trouble distinguishing colors and needing more light to see. These vision changes can often be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or simply improving the lighting in our homes.

The Lions organized in 1925 as Knights for the blind, and they have been providing services for the visually impaired ever since. Alaska Lions were founded in 1945 and truly have been knights for the blind and visually impaired. Though our service includes going to area schools and screening our communities’ kids, we also offer guidance to those who need financial aid, raise money to help provide service animals, and help others in our community when they are in need.

We would like to thank all the people who support our fundraising projects. Your support helped make it possible for us to purchase the Lions’ Eye Screening Trailer and the technical equipment to do the projects that have made the difference in the lives of so many. We hope to see you at the fair; stop in and say hi, and don’t forget we always have free goodies to hand out!
