Extravaganza to benefit local boy

Kindergartner fights rare disorder

Area residents will get a chance to help one of their own when the Eagle River Elks Club hosts a special benefit for Ethan Fleetwood, a Chugiak Elementary kindergartner who suffers from a rare genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis (NF).

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, NF is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow in the nervous system. According to his kindergarten teacher, Jennifer Carlson, Ethan underwent surgery on March 8 to remove several tumors.

In order to help the family with its medical bills, Carlson is organizing an “Evening Extravaganza with Ethan” on Wednesday, April 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the club, which is located at Mile 1.5 Eagle River Road. The event will feature a host of activities, including karaoke, songs and stories by Eric Ode, silent and live auctions, a rock wall mural, face painting, a “noodle and doodle” station, board games, cupcake bingo and more.

Anyone interested in donating an auction item can call Carlson at 742-3400 or email Carlson_jennifer@asdk12.org. Additionally, anyone wanting to make a donation can do so at Key Bank, where an account has been set up for the family under account number 720153000925.
