Jessi Beverlin scored the game’s lone goal to lift Chugiak girls soccer past crosstown rival Eagle River 1-0 on March 31 at The Dome.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 3-1 in the Cook Inlet Conference while Eagle River fell to 1-2-1.
Both teams are in action today (Thursday, April 5) at The Dome, with Eagle River taking on Bartlett at 4:40 p.m. and Chugiak playing South at 6:30 p.m.
The Wolverines — last year’s Class 4A state champions — will be a good test for Chugiak, head coach Paul Brehmer said.
Beverlin’s first-half goal was the result of a misplay by Eagle River keeper Tara Fisher. Coming well out of her net, Fisher didn’t get a solid foot on the ball, and it rolled right to Beverlin, who chipped it into the gaping goal.
If the Mustangs didn’t score on that play, they would have later in the game as Eagle River allowed Chugiak too many scoring opportunities, Wolves’ head coach Lauren Mason said.
“They had more and better chances than we did,” she said.
Mason said Eagle River has issues with its attacking shape.
“Our forward runs aren’t what they need to be,” she said.
With no one to pass to and a majority of the team committed to attacking, Eagle River’s midfielders get stripped and the opposing team has too much room to run its offense, Mason said.
“We need to figure that out or change our shape,” she said.
Eagle River is sound defensively, Mason said.
“Our defensive shape is good,” she said.
Brehmer said the close match was just what he expected, as no one wanted to lose to their rival.
“It was a typical Chugiak, Eagle River game,” he said. “It’s a good rivalry.”
Coach Brehmer said he was pleased to notch another conference win early in the season.
“I was pretty happy with our possession game and the scoring opportunities that we had,” he said. “Overall, it was a pretty good game.”
