Taus, Sheets win on ‘The Rock’

Dominic Taus and Logan Sheets each won individual titles at the Robin Hervey tournament in Kodiak on Nov. 18-19.

Taus, a senior ranked sixth in Class 4A at 145 pounds by Akmat.org, wrestled up and won the 152-pound championship.

Sheets, Class 4A’s fourth-ranked 170-pounder, won at 170 pounds, while teammte Nate Gorski placed fourth in the division.

The Wolves were particularly deep at 220-pound class, where Kevin Gilliland was second, Nick Greener third and John Brassell finished fourth.

Other placewinners for the Wolves included Austin Quesenberry (third at 145) and Cory Florence (fourth at 152).

Though she didn’t place, Katie Alvarado won the tournament’s Fan’s Choice award.

Wrestlers returned to action after a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday. On Wednesday, Nov. 30, Eagle River took on Dimond and Chugiak faced West.

The Mustangs will travel to the North-South Invitational at Wasilla this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3. Eagle River coach Daren Williams said he plans to send a handful of wrestlers to Wasilla, while the remainder will stay home for a junior varsity jamboree at Eagle River on Saturday, Dec. 3.
