Chugiak’s Garrett Morrison and Alex Medeiros each came away from the Alaska Duals with perfect records to help the Mustangs to a 3-3 record and a tie for seventh place in the 16-team tournament at South High on Dec. 9-10.

Wrestling at 182 pounds, Morrison won four of his five matches by pin, with the other victory coming by major decision. Medeiros (195) went 4-0 with two pins and a major decision for the Mustangs.

Chugiak also had a strong showing from 132-pounder Jake Wenzl, who went 5-1. Wenzl’s only loss came to Dillon Achman of Lathrop, the state’s top-ranked 132-pounder, according to akmat.org. Kody Trombley fared well also, going 3-1 at 285 pounds.

The Mustangs went 2-1 on Friday, beating Soldotna and Bartlett before falling to second-place Wasilla. On Saturday, the Mustangs beat Colony and fell to Lathrop and Palmer — the latter match by just a single point.

Eagle River went 1-5 in the tournament, picking up a victory on Saturday over Bartlett.

On Friday, the Wolves dropped decisions to West, Kodiak and Lathrop. On Saturday, Dimond and Kenai were able to hold off the Wolves.

Logan Sheets went 4-1 on the weekend at 170 pounds for Eagle River. Cory Florence (152) went undefeated for the Wolves, while Nate Gorski went 3-1 at 182 pounds.

This weekend’s West Christmas Classic, which begins Friday, is the final tournament before wrestlers take a three-week break for Christmas.
