Heading into Friday's 10-kilometer mass start classic race on Day 2 of the ASAA Alaska State Nordic Skiing Championships at Kincaid Park, Chugiak senior Isaac Lammers found himself trailing East's Thomas O'Harra by just over six seconds after Thursday's freestyle race. So when he crossed the finish line in first place in the classic race, Lammers knew he still had a few seconds to worry that O'Harra might come charging up behind him.

But when he looked back down the trail, there was nobody there.

"My coach said 'I've got the timer going,'" Lammers recalled.

But as Chugiak coach Mikey Evans ticked off the seconds, it quickly became apparent that Lammers had nothing to worry about.

"I felt really good today," he said.

Lammers won the classic race by more than 18 seconds over second-place John Glen of Service and took the overall Skimeister crown by more than 19 seconds for his first individual state championship.

His dominant performance was one of several turned in by local athletes on the day. Also cracking the Top-10 in the Skimeister battle were Lammers' Chugiak teammates Alex Loan, who was 5th in the classic race and 5th in the Skimeister standings, and David McPhetres, who was 14th in the classic and 10th in the Skimeister.

Lammers' sister Sarissa finished 6th in the girls classic race and 6th in the Skimeister, while Eagle River's Hannah Stevens was 8th in the classic race and 7th in the Skimeister standings. West Valley's Hannah Boyer won the girls' Skimeister crown.

After two days of racing, the Chugiak boys trailed Cook Inlet Conference champion Service by 2 minutes, 15 seconds heading into Saturday's relay races.

The Eagle River boys were 14th. Ben Smith was 34th for the Wolves in the classic race to lead Eagle River, four spots ahead of teammate Will Timmons. Timmons was the top Eagle River boy in the Skimeister standings in 28th, while Smith finished 46th.

Chugiak's defending state champion girls team was in 7th heading into Saturday, while Eagle River was 11th.

Making the top 50 in the girls Skimeister standings were Chugiak's Sam Hartke (20th) and Amy Hartke (32nd).

LAMMERS 2ND AFTER DAY 1:

Chugak senior Isaac Lammers led three Mustang boys in the top 10 spots in the individual freestyle race Thursday on Day 1 of the ASAA Alaska State Nordic Skiing Championships at Kincaid Park.

Lammers finished the 7.5 kilometer boys race in 19 minutes, 8.7 seconds to put him 6.3 seconds back of race winner Thomas O'Harra of East. Lammers' teammate, junior Alex Loan was fourth and Chugiak sophomore David McPhetres finished 10th to give the Mustangs more top 10 skiers than any other school.

Lammers' sister, Sarissa, a sophomore, finished eighth in the 5-kilometer girls race to lead all local finishers. Eagle River junior Hannah Stevens was 10th. West Valley's Hannah Boyer won the race.

Will Timmons was the first Eagle River boys finisher across the line in 25th.

Isaac Lammers is still very much in the hunt for the state Skimeister title, which is awarded based on skiers' results in both the individual freestyle race and tomorrow's individual classic technique race. Last week at the Cook Inlet Conference meet, Lammers finished second to Service's John Glen, who was third in today's freestyle race.

Other finishers for the Chugiak boys included James Colles (35th), Robert Colles (47th) and Tim Sorensen (61st). For the Chugiak girls, Sam Hartke was 26th, followed by Amy Hartke (31st), Kate Arthen (51st), Malea McGimsey (84th) and Shannon Casey (85th).

Other finishers for the Eagle River boys included Evan Fisher (53rd), Ben Smith (62nd), Ben Hall (89th), Will Hail (95th) and Alec Smith (100th).

For the Eagle River girls, Brenna Wheeler was 59th, followed by Jackie Klecka (71st), Sarah Frankl (82nd), Kylee Sam (103rd), and Brooke Meredith (105th)
