6 locals nominated to service academies
Six Chugiak-Eagle River students were among 37 Alaska high school seniors nominated to U.S. service academies on Monday, Jan. 23 by Sen. Lisa Murkowski.
“This year’s nominees are stellar candidates who embody the leadership capabilities and strong characters we expect from our men and women in uniform,” Murkowski said in a press release. “It is a privilege to nominate such accomplished Alaskans for admission to our service academies.”
Among those nominated were Eagle River’s Evdokyia Hail (Air Force Academy), Veronica Morthorpe (Air Force Academy), Kevin Greco (U.S. Merchant Marine Academy), Eric Guinn (U.S. Military Academy) and O.J. Hall (U.S. Military Academy), along with Chugiak’s Shena Cousens (U.S. Military Academy).
Nominees were selected based on their academic record, extracurricular activities and potential for leadership. Sen. Murkowski’s nominees will now compete against other nationwide candidates for a space in the entering class. A congressional nomination does not guarantee admission to a service academy; service academies will make the final decisions.
