Michael “Max” Brandon Pickens, 26, died unexpectedly on Friday, February 17, 2012.

He was born Dec. 9, 1985 in Anchorage and attended Peters Creek Christian School, Anchorage Christian School and Chugiak High School. He graduated from high school in Anchorage. He also was trained as a welder.

At the time of his death, he was employed by Orso Restaurant as a cook. He had also worked at the Sullivan Arena, and spent one season as the Anchorage Aces’ mascot, “Boomer.”

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, hockey, and spending time with his family and especially with the children.

He is survived by his fiancé, Jessica Lundy; father, Richard E. Pickens; mother, Diane Pickens; step-mother, Katie Kurpius; paternal grandmother, Lois Pickens; brothers and sisters-in-law Drue and Amy Pickens and Michael and Shannon Pickens; sister and brother-in-law Kim and Joe Filley; brother, Kyle Pickens; sister, Brittany Pickens; siblings Cassandra, Tay, and Joshua Kurpius; aunts Madalyn McEwen, Colleen Lovelace, Janette Pickens and Sandra Johnson; uncles, Billy Pickens, Raymond (Juanita) Pickens, Eric (Tana) Pickens, Marvin (Dawn) Pickens, and Denver Butz; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Richard C. Pickens; maternal grandmother, Edna Butz; and cousins, Brittany Cox and Chad McEwen.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at Legacy Funeral Home, Kehl’s Chapel, 11621 Old Seward Highway in Anchorage.
