Cayle Byers, a 2007 Chugiak grad who wrestles for Oklahoma State University, placed third at the NCAA Division I national tournament on Saturday, March 17, in St. Louis.
Wrestling at 197 pounds, Byers, a senior, won twice on Saturday to claim third. He beat Minnesota's Sonny Yohn, 8-1, to reach the third place match. There, he took out No. 3 seed Matthew Wilps of Pittsburgh, 3-2 on riding time.
Byers' only loss of the tournament came during Friday night's semifinal round, when he fell 6-3 to No. 1 seed Cam Simaz of Cornell.
Byers' performance earned him All-American status. However, he told the Oklahoma State University sports information department he had even loftier goals.
"Obviously you don't come here to just be an All-American," he said. "You come to win it. I'm not satisfied, but I'm happy."
Byers finished his season 28-4 and went 112-22 in his career. He transferred to Oklahoma State before this season and was the Big 12 Conference champion.
