Byers heads to nationals as Big 12 champ

Cayle Byers, a 2007 Chugiak High graduate who now wrestles for Oklahoma State University, won a Big 12 Conference wrestling championship at 197 pounds on Saturday, March 3, in Columbia, Mo.

Byers, a senior, defeated Missouri's Brent Haynes 5-0 in the title match.

He'll now move onto the NCAA Division I National Tournament, which will be held March 15-17 in St. Louis.

OSU, which entered the tournament ranked No. 3 in the nation, finished second to host Missouri in the team standings.

Byers was a four-time Alaska Class 4A state tournament placewinner who won individual state championships in 2006 and '07 for the Mustangs.
