CIC meet splashes off today
Chugiak’s Sam Burke is area’s top swimmer; Friedli leads local divers
Chugiak’s Samantha Burke is the top local swimmer heading into this weekend’s Cook Inlet Conference Swim/Dive meet at Bartlett High, which begins today with diving preliminaries and continues Friday with swimming prelims. Finals for both swimming and diving will be held Saturday, Oct. 29.
Entering the meet, Burke is ranked among the top four swimmers in the CIC in six different events, including the 200 free, 50 free, 100 fly, 100 free, 500 free and 100 back. No other local swimmer has posted a top-4 CIC time this season in more than one event.
While Burke is a legitimate state meet contender, Chugiak diver Kaitlyn Friedli will have her sights set on a CIC championship. Entering the meet, Friedli is ranked first among all CIC divers and has posted the third-best score of all female divers statewide.
Swimming and diving well at the CIC meet is the only way to qualify for state. The winner of each individual swimming event earns an automatic berth to state, as do the next 12 best times posted from conference finals around the state. In diving, the top two finishers at the CIC meet get automatic bids, as do the next best eight scores from around the state.
Other local swimmers who have posted top times this season include Chugiak’s Erin Cockreham (4th in the CIC in the 100 backstroke), Eagle River’s Kate Mondl (6th in the 500 free), Chugiak’s Andrew Espe (3rd 100 back), Chugiak’s Ethan Espe (3rd 100 breast) and Eagle River’s Blaise Fox-Icarro (6th 500 free).
