“Christmas Lane Planned”
The following was printed in the old Chugiak Calendar, a small mimeographed newspaper containing local business ads, classifieds and notices of upcoming events. The date is Dec. 1953:
This year Chugiak is going to have a Christmas Lane, a Christmas lighting contest all along the 14 miles of its main street, from Eagle River to Eklutna. If you live along the Palmer Highway where your lights can be seen, you are invited to participate. Prizes will be awarded for the most attractive outside home, business and civic organization displays. Entrance fees are .50 cents for homes, $1 for business places and $5 for civic groups. All displays will be judged by a committee selected from outside the community between Dec. 19 and Dec. 26. You will be approached to participate and if you miss meeting the solicitors you can sign up at Haik’s, Swanson’s, Moosehorn, Parks’ or with Mrs. George Sehm, the chair of the Christmas Lane Committee. The applications must be in with the fee for your lighting arrangement to be judged.
