Horton, Burroughs place second at Christmas Classic
Eagle River wrestlers 10th, Chugiak 11th
Chugiak’s Richard Burroughs pins West’s Lui Faumasino during their match at 220 pounds at the West Christmas Classic on Saturday, Dec. 15. Burroughs placed second in the tournament, falling 3-1 to Colony’s Ian MacKenzie in the championship match. Eagle River’s Xavier Horton was also second in the tournament, falling 9-4 in the championship to Kodiak’s Cameron White.
Xavier Horton and Richard Burroughs each earned second-place finishes to lead all local wrestlers at the West Christmas Classic on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14-15.
At 145 pounds, Eagle River’s Horton lost a 9-4 decision to Cameron White of Kodiak in the championship match.
Colony’s Ian MacKenzie edged Burroughs, of Chugiak, 3-1 in the 220-pound title match.
Eagle River finished 10th as a team with 185 points ahead of 11th-place Chugiak with 154.5. Wasilla won the team title with 442.5 points.
Zach Luff (120) finished fourth for Eagle River after coming up short on an 8-6 decision to South’s Rami Pellumbi in the third-place match.
Eagle River’s Gavin Arnold (132) claimed third place with a 12-2 major decision over Kenai Central’s Aaron Troxell-Tom.
Hayden Riebe (138) placed fifth for the Wolves while Cory Florence (145) was sixth.
Dustin Holta (126) took third for Chugiak. He earned a 9-6 decision over Bartlett’s Tyler Nunez in the third-place match.
Toren Cheely (195) finished sixth for the Mustangs.
Chugiak 47, Bartlett 27
Five Mustangs won by pinfall in Chugiak’s 47-27 win over Bartlett on Dec. 12.
At 285 pounds, Chugiak’s Wyatt Allen pinned Bartlett’s Otto Ducasse in just 48 seconds.
Chase Jury (132), Brandon Lowe (152), Alex Medeiros (182) and Richard Burroughs (220) also earned pins for the Mustangs.
Dustin Holta (126) won a 6-4 decision; Colten Jury earned a 17-1 technical fall and Toren Cheely (195) won 10-5 for Chugiak.
Service 75, Eagle River 12
Cory Florence (145) and Hayden Riebe (138) earned the only wins — both by pinfall — for Eagle River in its 75-12 loss to Service on Dec. 13.
