Eagle River boys hoops race past Mustangs

Shaquan Rhoades’ 25 points helped Eagle River defeat visiting Chugiak 84-69 on Saturday, Feb. 9. Eric Roberts (17 points) and Thomas Jones (14) also reached double digits for the Wolves, who improved to 4-4 in the Cook Inlet Conference.

Skyler Fullmer (25 points) and Payton Fullmer (23) led Chugiak, which fell to 0-7 in the conference.

The crosstown rivals meet again Saturday, Feb. 16 at Chugiak. The girls’ tipoff is set for 6 p.m. with the boys following at 7:30.

The Mustangs host East today (Feb. 14) at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Both Chugiak and Eagle River were in action Wednesday, Feb. 13, but scores were not available when the Star went to press.

 

Kodiak 59, Chugiak 41

The Fullmer cousins scored 14 points each in the Mustangs’ 59-41 loss to nonconference Kodiak on Feb. 7 at Chugiak.

 

GIRLS

Chugiak fifth at Shootout

Chugiak finished fifth in the Maroon bracket of Dimond’s Lady Lynx Prep Shootout after falling to Palmer 65-54 on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Brandy Bookout, who averaged 10 points over four games, was Chugiak’s lone player named to the Maroon All-Tournament team. Haley Scott was the Mustangs’ top scorer with 53 points for the tournament — 22 of which came against the Moose.

Chugiak opened with a 57-33 loss to Kodiak on Feb. 6. Scott and Bookout scored 10 points apiece.

A loss on the first day sent the Mustangs to the Maroon bracket. Winners went to the Gold bracket.

On Feb. 7, Chugiak edged Bartlett 47-45. Andre Samaniego scored a game-high 15 points for the Mustangs. Bookout added 14.

Scott and Madison McAleavey scored 12 points each in a 52-43 loss to Juneau-Douglas on Friday, Feb. 8.

West High won the Maroon bracket and Wasilla beat host Dimond 49-43 to claim first in the Gold division.

 

Eagle River 59, Lumen Christi 41

Eagle River downed host Lumen Christi 59-41 in nonconference action Feb. 7. Dana Panfil led the Wolves with 20 points. Sam Coy scored 13.
