Couples celebrate milestone anniversaries

A pair of local couples celebrated milestone anniversaries on Valentine’s Day in 1997.

Bill and Sunny Platzer celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They first met at a California malt shop and were married Feb. 14, 1947. They moved to Peters Creek in 1958, and had been in the Chugiak-Eagle River area since.

Wasilla’s Art and Ardena Mongeau were married at Eagle River Baptist Church in 1972. They raised four children in Chugiak before moving to the Mat-Su Valley.

Eklutna elects first female chief

The Native Village of Eklutna elected its first female chief, Dorothy Cook, following a vote Jan. 25, 1997.

Cook was the sister of outgoing chair George Ondola and also the granddaughter of Eklutna Alex, whom the village is named after.

Cook said she didn’t feel her gender made much of a difference in the voting.

“I don’t think it matters,” she told the Star. “I never thought about it.”

Cook said her top priority would be to get a new community center built for the village.
