Chugiak starts its quest for a Class 4A state hockey title today (Thursday, Feb. 13) against Soldotna at 2:30 p.m. at the Menard Sports Complex in Wasilla.

The Mustangs are the third seed out of the Cook Inlet Conference and the Stars are the top team from the North Star Conference.

Chugiak earned the No. 3 seed by defeating West High 3-1 on Friday, Feb. 7 at the McDonald Center. Chugiak’s William Casey tied the game with a goal in the second period.

Taylor Garner’s tally five minutes into the third proved to be the game-winner. Garner sealed the win with an insurance goal with just over a minute left in regulation.

Chugiak netminder Jack Straub made 36 saves.

In other state action today, South takes on Lathrop, the Mid Alaska Conference’s second seed. Dimond edged South 4-3 on Saturday, Feb. 8 to claim the CIC title.

The Lynx take on Wasilla — the North Star’s second seed — in the first round, and West meets West Valley, the top Mid Alaska seed.
