Three local grapplers reached the finals of the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska 2014 Class 4A Wrestling State Championships on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Bartlett High.

All three finished second.

The finals started off with a rematch of the 170-pound Cook Inlet Conference finals. Like he did a week prior, East’s Cesar Guzman defeated Eagle River High senior Xavier Horton, earning a slim 5-3 decision.

Eagle River sophomore Gavin Arnold also met a familiar foe in the 138-pound finals. South’s Kraig Hammond earned a technical fall victory Saturday, and he topped Arnold for the CIC title nearly two weeks ago.

Chugiak’s Robert Huffer also reached the finals. The 152-pound senior was pinned by Wasilla’s Nate McKimson in 5:36.

Three other local wrestlers placed at state. Those included Eagle River’s Ed Hall (third at 195 pounds); Chugiak’s Dustin Holta (fifth at 138) and Chugiak’s Richard Burroughs (sixth at 220).

Wasilla won the team title with 233.5 points. Eagle River (73 points) finished 12th and Chugiak (51.5) was 13th.
