“A bus named Porky Pig”

Published:

From the Dec. 14, 1962 issue of “The Eagle,” a local weekly paper published by Shirley Mauldin in the early 1960s:

We have learned from one of our Eagle River residents who teaches school at Fort Richardson that the school busses carrying grade and junior high students have recently been given “names” rather than numbers. The bus names have a corresponding picture of their namesakes in one of the side windows of the bus. Walt Disney and other cartoon characters are especially popular.

And, though the youngsters do not think it so amusing, adults see considerable humor in such bus changes which read: “Smokey Bear will pick up those children Porky Pig cannot.”
