2013 Alaska ProStart Invitational

Teams from Chugiak High placed first in both the Culinary and Management competitions at the 2013 Alaska ProStart Invitational Feb. 23 in Anchorage. The two teams will travel to the national competition in Baltimore, Md., April 19-21.

ProStart is a two-year educational program supported by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation in partnership with state restaurant associations. The program is sponsored in Alaska by the Alaska CHARR group.

“ProStart gives students a sense of purpose and helps them feel passionate about their own future – that passion will be on full display when the students represent Alaska in the National ProStart Invitational,” said ProStart coordinator Amber Zerbe.

Chugiak’s Culinary team included Kornelis VanWeel, Kaitlin Head, Cassidy Cledenning, Serena Marquez, Racheal Reeves. The students were mentored by Brian Cox of Pizza Man.

The Management team included McKenna Mitchell, Carrie Cook and Nichole Musil, mentored by Laile Fairbairn of Snow City Café and the Spenard Roadhouse. The teams will travel to Baltimore along with Chugiak culinary arts teacher Kathy Vik.

Each student received $15,000 in scholarships for the victory.

“It’s a great start for them,” Vik said.
