Home cooking at Besh Cup
Local skiers sped around the Beach Lake Trails as if they were in their own backyards on Dec. 23 for the second of two Besh Cup races held before Christmas.
University of Alaska Fairbanks freshman Isaac Lammers, of Chugiak, finished fourth overall and second among Older Junior skiers in the 10-kilometer freestyle interval start event, while Lammers’ fellow Nanook, Chugiak’s Alyson McPhetres, was fifth in the women’s 5-kilometer event.
In that same women’s 5K race, Chugiak’s Sarissa Lammers finished second among J1 racers, while her Chugiak High and Alaska Nordic Racing (ANR) teammate, senior Sam Hartke, was third in the J1 class.
In Saturday’s classic sprints, APU’s Lauren Fritz, of Eagle River, was third overall among the women, while Isaac Lammers finished 14th overall and 5th among Older Juniors.
After two of six races, five local skiers are in position to qualify for Junior Nationals, including Isaac Lammers and ANR’s David McPhetres on the boys side and Sarissa Lammers, Sam Hartke and Eagle River’s Hannah Stevens (all of ANR) on the girls.
The next races in the series — which is used to determine Alaska’s Junior National and Arctic Winter Games teams — will be held Jan. 19-20 at Tsalteshi Trails in Soldotna.
