While this is the Lions Corner, as we move into the New Year, I would like to introduce you to a non-profit of a different kind that serves our community for an unfortunate need.

Almost 75 percent of Alaskans have experienced, or know someone who has experienced domestic violence, or sexual assault. buse affects families in all income brackets. Most victims are women who find themselves in the position of choosing freedom from abuse at the cost of loss of financial support.

The Eva Foundation is a local non-profit, founded in 2004, that works to help survivors of abuse regain their self-confidence and independence.

The Eva Foundation board of directors and committee members are volunteers who have joined together to provide amenities to all survivors of abuse, male and female, young and old, in Anchorage, Chugiak-Eagle River and the Mat-Su Valley. To date the foundation has served over 1,000 clients.

The foundation provides esteem-building necessities to help survivors secure an abuse-free future for themselves and their loved ones. Services provided include household goods, groceries, furniture, rental and utility assistance, resume and interview preparation, clothing and haircuts.

Many people will not leave their abuser while their beloved pets are at home. The Eva Pet’s Program assists in keeping pets healthy and safe during a family’s transition to an abuse-free life by providing resources such as veterinarian services, leashes, pet beds, kennels, food and toys.

The Eva Elder’s Program provides the elderly with self-esteem building services such as haircut, clothing, housewares, and entertainment while ensuring proper care is given to help preserve health, dignity and respect.

The Eva Kid’s Program helps rebuild and give stability to the lives of children affected by abuse by providing basic necessities while they transition to a healthy lifestyle.

The Kid’s Program assists during the transition by providing kids with clothing, backpacks and school supplies. The Eva Foundation Cakes for Kid’s gives children, who are celebrating a birthday in a shelter, a special cake and presents. Outreach to teenagers includes help with prom attire and hair styling, and Christmas gifts and items of warm clothing to homeless teens.
