Just 6 make up BCS girls basketball team

If nothing else, Birchwood Christian School’s girls basketball team will be in phenomenal shape this year.

With just six on the roster, BCS must be well conditioned to compete with the fast-paced games of its Peninsula Conference foes, head coach Tamie Vickers said.

“I don’t have a lot of bodies,” she said. “They’re gonna be in really good shape.”

Tia Goward and Audrea Roberts are the only returners with significant varsity minutes. But the rest of the Warriors won’t have a problem gaining experience.

One bright spot is that BCS doesn’t have any seniors, and could potentially return its entire team next season. Roberts and Aubrey Becker — both juniors — are the team’s only upperclassmen. Tia Goward, Tera Goward and Kortney Craig are sophomores and Bryce Vickers is the lone freshman.

Injuries are something the Warriors can’t afford with a short bench. Coach Vickers said she’s been stressing eating well, getting enough sleep and overall health to her team.

While there are adjustments that need to be made early on in the season, coach Vickers said she’s focused on developing her squad throughout the year.

“It’s how we’re going to improve through the season,” she said.

Motivating her team is something coach Vickers doesn’t have to do.

“They work hard,” she said. “They all hustle. They all play with a lot of heart.”
