Questions to Ask God When Meditating Upon His Word

Published:

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

— Psalm 1 (NIV)

The following questions came to mind when studying Psalm 1:

1. Is God’s Spirit applying this verse to my present situation?

2. Is there a promise here for me to claim?

3. Is this passage revealing a particular sin I must strive to avoid?

4. Is my spirit in harmony with what the Holy Spirit is saying?

5. Is the passage expressing a truth about God, salvation, sin, the world, or my personal obedience on which I need to be enlightened by the Holy Spirit?

Verses 1-3 are most promising in Psalm 1. The outcome of those who faithfully seek God and His Word is life in the Spirit. Since water often represents the Spirit of God, those who are instructed by God and abide in His Word will receive and unfailing source of life from the Spirit. As we see in John 7:38-39 (NIV) 38: Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.

By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. In Psalm 1:3 the phrase “whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” does not mean that problems or failures will never occur, but rather that a godly person will know God’s will and blessing.

Studying God’s word can be most enlightening when these questions are asked. I hope you will discover these questions to be helpful in your study of the God’s Word. Reflecting upon God’s Word will transform your life and can be very rewarding.
