Tough week for 4A basketball teams
Birchwood Christian notches victories
For the second straight week, all local 4A basketball teams came up winless. At the 1A level, Birchwood Christian School went undefeated last week.
Here’s a look at the scores:
GIRLS
Dillingham 53, Eagle River 38
Tournament champion Dillingham handed Eagle River a 53-38 loss at Nikiski’s Era Aviation Tip-Off on Saturday, Jan. 11. Sam Coy led the Wolves with 24 points.
The Wolves hosted West on Wednesday, Jan. 16, but a score wasn’t available when the Star went to press.
BCS 43, Wasilla Lake 38
Visiting Birchwood Christian School downed Wasilla Lake Christian School 43-38 on Saturday, Jan. 12.
Nikiski 67, Eagle River 25
Tessa Heagy led the Wolves with 10 points in a 67-25 loss to tournament host Nikiski on Friday, Jan. 11 at the Era Aviation Tip-Off.
Houston 39, Eagle River 20
Leading by five after three quarters, Houston racked up 19 fourth-quarter points to beat Eagle River 39-20 at the Era Aviation Tip-Off on Jan. 10 at Nikiski. Shekinah Young paced the Wolves with nine points and Coy added seven.
Wasilla 57, Chugiak 28
Wasilla built an 11-point halftime lead and never looked back as the Warriors cruised past visiting Chugiak 57-28 on Jan. 10. Andre Samaniego led the Mustangs with nine points followed by Brandy Bookout with eight.
BOYS
West 59, Eagle River 58
Tournament host West edged Eagle River 59-58 in the final day of the Alaska Airlines Classic on Saturday, Jan. 12.
Hunter Hill paced the Wolves with 24 points followed by Shaquan Rhoades with 14.
Hoover High (Ala.) cruised past Thunder Mountain 70-45 in the title game.
The Eagles and Wolves met again Wednesday, Jan. 16, but a score was not available when the Star went to press.
BCS 62, Wasilla Lake 43
Visiting Birchwood Christian School beat Wasilla Lake Christian School 62-43 on Saturday, Jan. 12. For the second straight day, Mike Rud, Caleb Duplessis and Tyler Keiffer each scored in double digits for BCS.
BCS 71, Seldovia 37
Rud exploded for 26 points to lead Birchwood Christian School past visiting Seldovia 71-37 on Friday, Jan. 11. Duplessis (18 points) and Keiffer (16) also reached double digits for BCS.
Service 76, Eagle River 62
Shaquan Rhoades scored a team-high 20 points in Eagle River’s 76-62 loss to Service on Friday, Jan. 11 at the Alaska Airlines Classic at West High. Hill and Nicholas Montgomery added 13 points apiece for the Wolves.
Sagemont 73, Eagle River 39
Sagemont High (Fla.) downed Eagle River 73-39 in the first round of the Alaska Airlines Classic at West High on Jan. 10. Montgomery led the Wolves with nine points. Rhoades, Eric Roberts and Hill each scored eight.
