Locals shine at state air rifle championships

Su Valley 81, BCS 62

Visiting Su Valley defeated Birchwood Christian School by the score of 81-62 on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Tyler Keiffer paced the Warriors with 30 points.

 

West 63, Chugiak 41

Visiting West High downed Chugiak 63-41 on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Isa Wilson and Brandon Huffman scored 12 points apiece for the Eagles.

Matt Oldenkamp paced the Mustangs with 12 points.

 

BCS 57, Kodiak ESS 34

Dakota Jones scored a game-high 22 points to lead Birchwood past visiting Kodiak ESS 57-34 on Friday, Jan. 17. Keiffer added 13 points for the Warriors.

 

Girls

Su Valley 27, BCS 24

Visiting Su Valley edged Birchwood Christian School 27-24 on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Bryce Vickers, Tia Goward and Aubrey Becker combined for 19 of the Warriors’ points. Vickers had a team-high seven.

 

West 55, Chugiak 50

West High edged host Chugiak by a score of 55-50 on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Nicole Pinckney scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Mustangs. Brandy Bookout added 13 points for Chugiak.

 

Chugiak 56, South 47

Bookout scored a game-high 18 points to lead visiting Chugiak past South 56-47 on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Pinckney poured in 17 points for the Mustangs.

 

Chugiak 49, Service 9

Bookout (15 points) and Pinckney (10) scored double digits for Chugiak in the Mustangs’ 49-9 win over host Service on Jan. 16. Anna Ingraham added eight points for Chugiak.

 

Bowling

Eagle River earns sweep

The Wolves swept Service in Anchorage Scholastic Bowling League play Jan. 16 at Center Bowl.

Shannon Jones rolled a high game 195 to help the girls cruise to a 27-8 victory. In the boys game, Eagle River edged the Cougars 19-16.

 

Chugiak falls to Bartlett

Bartlett swept Chugiak with a 33-2 win in the boys match and a 29-6 victory in the girls match.

 

Nordic skiing

David McPhetres and Roan Hall teamed up to take third in a relay race Jan. 14 at Kincaid Park. The duo led all local skiers.

The Mustangs had three relays in the top 17 of the boys race. David Warner and Michael Teeples placed 15th and Tim Sorensen and Caleb Huntington were 17th.

Jacob Walsh and Bradan Tobin were 19th for Eagle River.

East High’s John Farr and Thomas O’Harra won with a combined time of 16 minutes, 29.8 seconds.

On the girls side, Chugiak’s Hannah Booher and Ripleigh Campnell finished 13th — just one place ahead of fellow Mustangs Annie Connely and Sara Hartke.

The duo of Summer Frazier and Tessa Heagy finished 18th for Eagle River.

South’s Janey Hoefler and Anna Darnell won in 20:48.5.

 

Riflery

Eagle River High juniors Cat Papasodora and Tristan Henderson were part of the winning four-man team at the three-position air rifle state championships held Saturday, Jan. 18 at East High.

Papasodora, who won the individual Cook Inlet Conference title in December, fired a match-high 585 to help the Borealis Bullseyes claim the team title. Henderson fired a 574.

Papasodora and Henderson, along with teammates Marina Noble and Logan Hanscom, will compete in the regional championships in Utah in April.

Three Eagle River High students made up the third-place team. Those included Clarissa DeLeon (553), Jake Nall (557) and Sydney Deering (545).
