Longtime Eagle River resident Beverly Jean Smoot died Jan. 20, 2014, while admitted to Alaska Regional Hospital.

She was 73.

Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 28 at Legacy Funeral Homes Witzleben Chapel in Anchorage. Burial took place at Palmer Pioneer Cemetery thereafter.

Smoot was born July 21, 1940, in Fort Madison, Iowa, to Warren and Esther Holmes. She graduated from Fort Madison High School in 1958.

She married Daniel Edward Smoot on Oct. 27, 1958, at Englewood in Arapahoe County in Colorado.

She and Dan moved to Alaska in 1965 where they raised two children, Daniel Edward Jr. and Casey Warren Smoot.

Smoot worked for H&R Block in the 1970s in tax preparation.

She then attended Alaska Business College and graduated in 1979 with a certificate in accounting.

She then went to work for Rollins Burdick Hunter of Alaska as a bond supervisor.

Later, she worked for Alaska Business Insurance Inc. as an account assistant in property and casualty and later became office manager.

In retirement, she enjoyed sewing, knitting and gardening.

She also enjoyed building homes and traveling with Dan.

She also loved raising her Yorkshire terrier dogs.

She enjoyed working on her log home in Eagle River, which she loved as much as Alaska.

She is survived by her brother, Warren Holmes Jr. of Iowa; sisters, Phyllis Bradenburg of Iowa and Pat Bradley of Illinois; sons, Daniel Edward Smoot Jr. of Alaska and Casey Warren Smoot and daughter-in-law Bobbi Lynn of Utah; grandchildren, Nicole Lynn Smoot, Casey Daniel Smoot, Heather Renee Smoot, Rachel Lee Smoot; and great-granddaughter, Emily Grayson Smoot, all of Alaska.
