Speed the Light and pedal for a purpose

GATE WAY FELLOWSHIP
Gate Way Fellowship, located in Chugiak, is having its sixth annual Bike-a-thon called Bike the Light on July 19. Participants will be biking to raise money for Speed the Light.
Speed the Light (STL) is a student-initiated ministry that provides “essential transportation and creative communication” equipment to missionaries across the nation and in over 180 countries. Since its inception, STL has raised over $245 million. The equipment purchased goes to nationally appointed world and home missionaries.
We love this mission’s giving because we know that the money raised goes directly to help people with very practical needs. STL will purchase anything from snow machines to bikes to boats to help the missionaries get around the terrain in the areas they are sent to help people with the good news of Jesus Christ.
Our parish decided to support this by biking to raise money. It just seemed right, raising money for transportation needs by riding a bike, as done by so many of the missionaries around the world.
So the first year I biked from Anchorage to Girdwood and back, raising $1,100. People liked it so much they started asking if they could join. With other people joining it made more sense to bike the safer route between Anchorage and Eagle River. Starting at Bartlett High School going to Eagle River and back is 15 miles. People usually pledge to ride 15, 30 or 45 miles doing laps so that we get to pass and encourage each other as we go.
I’ve pledged 45 miles this year. Leilani Dodson has been a superstar since joining the effort and biking 30 miles each year and leading the way in individual pledges.
This has become a great event for us. It is encouraging both physical and spiritual health as people come together to support giving people hope. So far this annual event has raised over $16,100, with amazing adults and youth from Gate Way and other churches around the state joining the effort.
I believe that the event can really help to build relationship between adults and youth and break down barriers by doing things like this together for God.
I’ve also thrown down a new challenge this year to Gate Way Fellowship: If participants raise $3,750 this year, then next year, I will train and pledge to bike from Fairbanks to home. That is about 350 miles!
If you would like to make a donation and help to reach that goal please contact myself (Pastor Randy) at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (907) 688-4283.
