ABL ‘Opening Day’ a big hit

Published:

The Athletes in Action Fire and Anchorage Glacier Pilots played the first-ever Alaska Baseball League game at Loretta French Park in Chugiak, with the Pilots taking a 7-4 victory.

The game was played as a way to determine the feasiblity of moving the Fire to Loretta French full time in 2012.

The success of the game prompted the Ohio-based team to commit to Chugiak-Eagle River. The team officially changed its name later in 2011 to the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks, and began regular play at Loretta French in June 2012.

A truly slimy politician

U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski made her annual stop at the Bear Paw Festival, again taking part in the Slippery Salmon Olympics by carrying a dead fish the length of a short race course.

After the race, Murkowski took time to speak with the Star about a variety of issues — including the slimy salmon she’d just sprinted with.

“The quality of the fish this year was particularly...gross,” Murkowski told the Star.

One Moe time

Jake Moe and Hallidie Wilt were the winners of the 2011 Bear Paw 5K race. Moe, 27, finished nearly a minute in front of his next-closest pursuer.

“I’ts my favorite 5K,” siad Moe, of Anchorage.

Unalaska’s Wilt outraced Leslie Varys to the finish line, winning by 12 seconds.

Note: The 2012 Bear Paw 5K begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 12. The starting line is near the Eagle River Midas.
