Walgren wins tight Bear Paw 5K

Eagle River's Tim Sorensen (5777) and Anchorage's Jake Moe (671) lead the pack during the start of the Bear Paw 5K on Saturday, July 14. Sorensen finished second to Chugiak's Isaac Lammers (over Sorensen's left shoulder) in the male 15-19 division. Moe, the defending champion, was third overall. Sorensen will be a junior at Chugiak High this fall; Lammers is heading to the University of Alaska Fairbanks to join that school's Nordic ski team. Robert Walgren won the race in 15:11, beating fellow Anchorage runner Anthony Tomisch by less than a second.

Anchorage's Robert Walgren beat fellow Anchorage runner Anthony Tomisch by less than a second to win the 2012 Bear Paw 5K on Saturday, July 14 in downtown Eagle River.

Both men finished in 15:11, with Walgren winning the sprint to the finish. Defending champion Jake Moe, also of Anchorage, was third in 15:17.

Tyler Knox was the top local finisher, finishing sixth in 16:35. Eagle River's Isaac Lammers was 7th. Other top local finishes on the men's side included Eagle River's Joe Alward (9th), Levi Younger (10th), Tim Sorensen (11th) and Chugiak's Greg Schroll (13th).

Anchorage's Halidie Wilt defended her 2011 women's crown in 17:59. Eagle River High junior-to-be Kaitlyn Mondl, of Anchorage, was second in 18:16. Other top Eagle River finishers were Sheryl Loan in 6th, Hannah Stevens (8th) and Mary O'Reilly 10th).
