Garrett leaving for CENTCOM duty at the end of this month
Maj. Gen. Michael Garrett’s most recent stay in Alaska has proved to be short-lived.
U.S. Army Alaska (USARAK) announced July 2 that Garrett — who took over as USARAK commanding general in May, 2012 — has been selected as the next Chief of Staff for U.S. Central Command, which is headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida.
Garrett will be replaced by Maj. Gen. Michael H. Shields, who currently serves as the director of Pakistan/Afghanistan Coordination Cell, J-5, Joint Staff in Washington, D.C.
Garrett arrived in Alaska having previously served on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson as commander of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division from 2006-08.
Shields was commander of USARAK’s Fort Wainwright-based 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team from July 2004 to December 2006, including 16 months of combat deployment in Iraq.
A change of command ceremony will be held July 30 at JBER’s Pershing Field.
