Stephen Burrus

Eagle River’s Stephen Earl Burrus died June 21, 2013 at home. He was 72.

A memorial service was held July 6 at the American Legion Post 33 in Peters Creek.

He was born June 17, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio to Margaret Wilks and Eugene Burrus. He grew up in Cleveland. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1959 at the age of 17, serving in Nova Scotia, France, Germany, Colorado and California. After honorable discharge, he was employed from 1963 to 1971 with International Industries (IHOP), opening over 300 restaurants. From 1971 until 1994, he owned and/or managed ten restaurants and catering companies in the San Francisco Bay area. He was known for his BBQ sauce. He came to Alaska in 1998, residing in Valdez and since 2000 in Eagle River.

Stephen enjoyed keeping his friends and family well fed at Tips Bar in Eagle River, the American Legion Post 33 in Peters Creek, American Legion Post 29 in Muldoon and at the Eagles Aerie 4174 in Peters Creek. He also enjoyed watching football, especially the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns, as well as the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 33 in Peters Creek and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4174.

“Although he lost his voice to cancer many years ago, Steve spoke volumes through his smile, caring nature, an abundance of facial expressions, and his random acts of kindness toward others,” his family said. “He is loved by all who knew him and will be missed.”

He is survived by his longtime partner of six years, Judy Cooper, of Eagle River; daughter, Marcella Wilson, San Francisco, Calif.; sons, Mario Burrus, of Oakland, Calif., and Tosh Burrus, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; step-daughter, Lenee Jones-Trotman, of Oakland; grandchildren, Mara, Shahkai and Tyce, of Oakland; stepson, Jamal Jones, of Santa Rosa; grandson, Josiah and granddaughter, Mariah, both of Santa Rosa; stepson, Diondre Jones, of Rohnert Park, Calif.; grandchildren, Dante, Leila, and Kahlil, all of Rohnert Park, Calif.; ex-wife, Laura Wiley, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; daughter, Stephanie Burrus, of Lindenhurst, NY; son, Sean Burrus, of Copiague, NY; grandsons, Roman and Tye, both of Copiague; ex-wife, Kathy Engeman of Phoenicia, NY; stepdaughter, Jamie Engeman, of Bethpage, NY; sister, Iris Johnson, of Omaha, NE; and brother, Tim Burrus, of Petaluma, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Wilks Austin; father, Eugene Burrus, Sr.; and brother, Eugene Burrus, Jr.
