“Caution Bears Working” was the theme this year. If you missed the Bear Paw Pageant last Thursday night, you missed a good time. There were 14 contestants showing us their style and creativity with costumes and skits related to an Alaskan theme.

The Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions Club has sponsored the Bear Paw Pageant in conjunction with the Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce for the 8th year in a row. Bears are strong and tenacious as are the Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions. By supporting this pageant, we hope to assist our youth in becoming successful in life by giving them scholarships to assist in their college endeavors.

This year’s pageant had seven girls and seven boys competing for the titles of Miss Bear Paw 2014 and Bear Paw King 2014. Contestants were students enrolled in private and public Anchorage School District schools located in the Chugiak-Eagle River area.

Contestants competed in front of a packed auditorium where they were judged on personal interviews, on-stage interviews, congeniality, Alaska costume competition, evening wear competition, community service and on-stage performance.

The Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions sponsored Ms. Taylor McGrath who also won the title of Miss Congeniality.

During the Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce luncheon we presented two contestants $500 each in scholarships for Outstanding Community Service. The winners were Erin Kitchin and Kyle Bringhurst. Additionally, Erin won Miss Bear Paw Princess and Kyle won Mr. Bear Paw Prince.

In addition to the above awards, we presented a $1000 scholarship to Queen, Victoria Jones who was the winner of the Miss Bear Paw 2014 title. Victoria also won the best costume of the evening by entertaining us with her king crab costume and skit.

The Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce presented the King, Chase Gates, with a $1000 scholarship for winning the Mr. Bear Paw title.

The Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions wish to thank and congratulate all of the youth who competed in the 2014 pageant. These youth are the future leadership of our communities.

Also, many thanks to those who support the Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions Club fundraisers, which make these scholarships possible.
