Three locals die in plane crash
Cessna found Tuesday near Rainy Pass
The bodies of three Eagle River residents were recovered Tuesday, March 5 from the scene of a small plane crash near Rainy Pass.
Killed in the accident were pilot Ted Smith, 59, Carolyn Sorvoja, 48, and Rosemarie Sorvoja, 10, all of Eagle River, according to Alaska State Troopers.
According to the Alaska National Guard, the three left Anchorage Monday morning en route to Takotna. A search that included the Guard, members of the Birchwood Civil Air Patrol, the Iditarod Air Force and private planes began after the plane was reported overdue Monday. Guard spokesperson Kalei Brooks said the Cessna 182 was located by a Guard helicopter at around 10:22 a.m. Tuesday near the 4,000 foot level of Rainy Pass.
Brooks said Smith didn’t file a flight plan, but that he was an experienced pilot who carried emergency beacons and traveled well equipped for emergencies.
