Eagle River’s Thomas Joseph Merrill died Feb. 24, 2013 at Alaska Regional Hospital with his family by his side.

A fourth-generation San Franciscan, Mr. Merrill was born to Kathleen Mooney Merrill and Elmer Merrill in the city’s Sunset District on Oct. 5, 1951. He was a carpenter by trade and a die-hard San Francisco Giants and 49ers fan.

“He had a magnetic personality, a true zest for life, and made friends wherever he went,” his family said. “He was a big hearted, fun loving guy who always had a warm smile for all, and never turned down the opportunity to go fishing, boating, and camping!”

He is survived by his mother, Kathleen Merrill Keegan; two sisters, Barbara Crittenden (Richard) of Eagle River and Judy White (Dennis) of San Francisco; son, Dylan Ferrell of Broomfield, Colo.; nephew, Ben Crittenden (Elizabeth); nieces, Rachel Crittenden Cruz (Samuel) of Eagle River and Emily White Violet (Lee) of San Bruno, Calif.; aunt, Barbara Mooney Nelson, of Truckee,Calif.; numerous cousins and friends; and longtime companion and friend Laura Hamilton.

A Funeral Mass was held March 2 at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Eagle River. A memorial mass will be held at a later date at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in San Francisco. All are invited.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff who took such loving care of Tom.

“Your kindness is much appreciated,” the family said. “We are also grateful to ‘Tony,’ for your skilled and heartfelt personal care to Tom.”

Donations to the American Liver Transplant Foundation can be made in Tom’s honor, or to a favorite charity.
