The Chugiak Dog Mushers Association held its 6th Annual Purebred Spring Fling on Saturday, March 16 at the Beach Lake Sled Dog Trails.

This annual event celebrates the northern breeds who are recognized by the American (AKC) and Canadian (CKC) kennel clubs and whose purpose is to work in harness.

This year, 15 teams of Siberian Huskies were entered in three classes: 8-dog/12-mile, 6-dog/6-mile, and 4-dog/4-mile. Teams came from as close as Anchorage and Chugiak, and as far as Willow and Tok. Many of the teams consisted of working-showing dogs, which means the dogs also not only can pull a sled, they also compete in AKC and CKC events whether it is in confirmation like you see on TV, or in obedience and agility. And even though these races were of a relatively short distance for a Siberian Husky, several of the dogs entered this past Saturday were Iditarod veterans.

Iditarod veteran Eric Rogers, the Race Marshall for the fifth year, noted the cool morning temperatures helped bring the most out of the dogs.

Following the race, participants stayed and enjoyed each other’s camaraderie during a potluck and awards ceremony. The racers and the CDMA wish to thank the following organizations who made donations to the race: Mountain Ridge Sled Dog Supplies from Shirley Mills, Maine, who donated gift certificates to each first place winner; the Siberian Husky of Anchorage, who dated funds toward the purse; and Sleddog.sk in Tok, which donated reflective collars to the first three places in each class.
