“More Fire Department News”
From the Knik Arm Courier, Sept. 28, 1966:
The Chugiak Volunteer Fire Company will not drain the tanks of any of their trucks this winter, according to Fire Chief Max Latimer.
With the completion of the Mink Creek substation on Birchwood Loop Road, all of the trucks will be housed in heated buildings and the tanks charged with water at all times.
The first of two proposed substations in the Birchwood area is located at approximately one and one-half miles from the south end of the Glenn Highway-Birchwood Loop intersection. It is adjacent to the residence of Chief Latimer, and the building will be heated by the furnace located in Latimer’s home through a heat transfer system.
The other two trucks and the ambulance will be housed in the heated fire hall at mile 18.5.
Hall to be named for Latimer
From the Knik Arm Courier, Sept. 2, 1970:
The new Chugiak Fire Hall, scheduled to be completed by Oct. 1, will be named for a former Chugiak Fire Chief, the late Max Latimer.
“Latimer Hall” will be officially dedicated on Oct. 10, the dedication to be held in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week.
An official dedication ceremony is planned, and Borough officials will be invited along with state dignitaries.
Special demonstrations of fire fighting equipment and techniques are planned for that day.
