“Eighth grade graduates receive awards”
(From the Knik Arm Courier, May 25, 1960)
Thirty-five students, the largest graduating class in the history of the Chugiak School, received their diplomas last Wednesday in the first formal graduation exercises to be held at the school. In previous years the diplomas had been awarded at a PTA sponsored banquet.
The ceremony opened with the pledge of allegiance led by Charles Mongeau. This was followed by a musical selection by the eighth grade girls and the introduction of the guests and several short talks by the eighth grade teachers.
Following this, excellent talks were given by the two eighth grade class presidents, Susan Carter and Fraya Petronavich. Three more songs by the eighth grade girls preceded the speech by the guest speaker, Mr. Clifford Hartman, principal of the Orah D. Clark Junior High School.
The program ended with the presentation of diplomas and special awards. Eileen Newton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wes Newton of Birchwood, led the special awards group by earning the four highest awards given at the Chugiak School. In addition to receiving a pin for winning the spelling contest, she received an honor roll pin, a citizenship award and one of the two fifty dollar awards donated by Mr. Raymond Tedrow of Eagle River to be given to the two top scholars.
Honor roll pins were also awarded to Fraya Petronavich, Paula Lemmon and Catherine Stevens. Susan Carter was also a recipient of a citizenship award and Catherine Stevens received the pin for being chosen the alternate best speller The other fifty dollar award was presented to Fraya Petronavich.
Of the thirty-five graduates, only two were unable to attend. One because of illness and the other who had left to homestead with his parents. The diplomas are being sent to them.
Note: Back in 1960, Chugiak School served grades 1-8. High schoolers were bussed to Anchorage High School.
